Hackensack is the county seat of Bergen County and one of the region’s principal civic, medical, and commercial centers. The city lies along the Hackensack River and includes the Bergen County courthouse and administrative complex, Hackensack University Medical Center, a growing downtown residential district, and several major shopping corridors. Interstate 80 runs along the northern side, while Routes 4, 17, and 46 are nearby. NJ Transit’s Pascack Valley Line serves the city at multiple stations, and local bus routes connect Hackensack with surrounding municipalities and New York City. The community combines dense apartment neighborhoods, older single-family areas, offices, government buildings, schools, and riverfront redevelopment sites. Its central position places it close to Teaneck, Maywood, South Hackensack, Lodi, and other Bergen County employment and residential centers.
