Rutherford is a Bergen County borough located just west of the Meadowlands and the Hackensack River. Park Avenue forms the heart of a walkable downtown with restaurants, shops, offices, civic buildings, and the Rutherford NJ Transit station. Rail service on the Bergen County Line connects the borough with Hoboken and communities to the north. Routes 3 and 17, the New Jersey Turnpike, and nearby Route 21 provide regional road access. Residential neighborhoods contain Victorian-era houses, early twentieth-century homes, apartments, and newer multifamily development. Rutherford is also home to Felician University and several parks, schools, and community institutions. The borough borders East Rutherford, Lyndhurst, North Arlington, and Clifton, placing it close to the Meadowlands Sports Complex and New York City transportation routes. Its historic housing, active downtown, rail connection, and compact street pattern have helped Rutherford maintain a strong local identity within the densely developed southern portion of Bergen County.
