Irvington is a compact Essex County township located immediately southwest of Newark. It borders Maplewood, Hillside, Union, and several Newark neighborhoods, placing it within a highly connected part of the metropolitan region. Springfield Avenue is one of the township’s principal commercial corridors, while the Garden State Parkway and nearby Interstate 78 provide regional access. Irvington developed as an early suburb of Newark and contains a dense mix of detached homes, apartment buildings, neighborhood shopping areas, schools, parks, civic buildings, and houses of worship. Its street network connects directly with adjoining municipalities, and many daily destinations are located along shared corridors. The township’s urban scale, established housing patterns, and close proximity to Newark distinguish it from the lower-density communities farther west in Essex and Union counties.
