Millburn Township is located in southwestern Essex County and includes the communities of Millburn and Short Hills. The municipality is known for established residential neighborhoods, a traditional downtown, strong rail connections, and immediate access to the South Mountain Reservation. Millburn Avenue forms the main commercial corridor, while NJ Transit stations in Millburn and Short Hills provide service on the Morris and Essex Lines toward Newark, Hoboken, and New York City. Interstate 78, Route 24, and nearby Route 124 connect the township with surrounding business centers. Paper Mill Playhouse is a major cultural destination near the Rahway River, and the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum adds another prominent local institution. Housing ranges from older homes near downtown to larger properties in Short Hills and newer multifamily development. Millburn borders Maplewood, Livingston, West Orange, Summit, Springfield, and Union Township. Its combination of rail service, cultural amenities, wooded parkland, and active village centers gives the township a distinctive place within the metropolitan region.
