West Caldwell is a township in western Essex County bordered by Caldwell, North Caldwell, Fairfield, Roseland, and Essex Fells. Bloomfield Avenue and Passaic Avenue serve as the main commercial corridors, while nearby Route 46, Interstate 80, and Interstate 280 provide regional access. The township contains established residential neighborhoods, schools, parks, houses of worship, professional offices, shopping areas, warehouses, and industrial properties. West Caldwell and Caldwell share a close local identity and several public services, although they remain separate municipalities. Development expanded significantly during the twentieth century as former farms and open land became residential subdivisions and employment centers. The Passaic River and associated lowlands influence the western edge, while denser neighborhoods lie closer to Caldwell's traditional downtown. West Caldwell's combination of suburban housing, industrial districts, and access to major Essex and Morris County routes gives it a varied role within the Caldwells area.
