Newfoundland is a small community centered near Route 23 in the Highlands of northwestern New Jersey. The name is associated primarily with sections of West Milford in Passaic County and neighboring Jefferson Township in Morris County, giving the area a cross-county identity. Route 23 provides the main regional connection, linking the community south toward Butler and Wayne and north toward Hamburg and Sussex County. Local roads extend into wooded residential neighborhoods, reservoirs, lakes, and large undeveloped tracts. Newfoundland historically developed as a rural crossroads and rail-related settlement, and remnants of that pattern remain in its scattered buildings and roadside businesses.
