Bound Brook is a borough in central Somerset County along the Raritan River, directly west of Middlesex Borough and south of Bridgewater. The community developed as a transportation and industrial center supported by river crossings, rail service, and nearby canals and roads. The NJ Transit station on the Raritan Valley Line provides service toward Somerville, Newark, and New York connections. Route 28 passes through the traditional downtown, while Route 22 and Interstate 287 are nearby. Bound Brook contains older residential neighborhoods, apartment buildings, schools, civic facilities, local businesses, warehouses, and industrial properties. The river and surrounding floodplain have strongly influenced development and public works over time. Historic buildings and a compact street grid remain visible near Main Street. Bound Brook's rail access, riverfront setting, and location at the meeting point of several major routes give it a more urban character than many neighboring Somerset County municipalities.
