North Plainfield is a Somerset County borough located along Green Brook directly north of the City of Plainfield. The community developed as a streetcar and rail-era suburb and retains many older homes, apartment buildings, neighborhood shopping areas, and historic streets. U.S. Route 22 crosses the northern part of the borough and provides access to Bridgewater, Mountainside, Interstate 78, and the wider region. Somerset Street and nearby local roads connect North Plainfield with Plainfield, Watchung, Green Brook, and Dunellen. The borough includes several recognized historic areas, along with parks, schools, civic buildings, and established residential neighborhoods. Its compact land area creates a close relationship between homes, local businesses, and regional commercial corridors. The Watchung Mountains rise just north of the community, while denser development continues south and east toward Union and Middlesex counties. North Plainfield’s location gives it both a Somerset County identity and strong everyday ties to Plainfield and the central New Jersey transportation network.
